Celebrate the LOVE.

This is our first Valentine's Day as an engaged couple! It doesn't sound like anything different, but we will only be having two of these in our lives, and obviously what better holiday to show someone you love them than Valentine's Day. I don't think its important to buy each other gifts or even get sucked into the "corporate" Valentine's Day -- but it is a reminder to just take a step back and appreciate what you have. I love Valentine's day for that reason - to have a special date or hang out time together!

Obviously Kyle knows whats up, because he did bring me home 20 beautiful roses. I mean, I don't NEED flowers, but I definitely love getting them! He is so sweet <3

Our date night included a dinner at our favorite little local restaurant, Cake. They only do dinners on Thursdays and Fridays for limited seating and it is so amazing. There is one chef who prepares all the dishes and the food is incredibly good. They also use local produce. We cannot get enough.

Then we went to see The Vow. I guess it was a pretty classic dinner and a movie date night, but we have not done that in such a long time, so it was a different thing for us. Funny thing is, I didn't really have to push Kyle to see this movie, he pretty much asked me to go. It really was more of a couples movie than just a girl movie. It was really good and based off of a true story, which is ridiculous! Plus I love anything with Rachel McAdams.  Sneak peek.. The Vow

Great night, no school, just Kyle and me. :) Happy Valentine's Day!

Keeping it in the family.

As soon as we got engaged, we knew we wanted to take engagement pictures. I think that this has become a more recent thing, because before looking at friend's pages who have gotten married, I didn't even know people did this. I absolutely love amazing pictures however, so knew that I wanted to get some great ones of Kyle and I. It makes sense to do them because you really have so many additional things to do for the wedding where pictures of the two of you make it unique and personalized - the wedding website, save the dates, wedding reception books, etc. I was just so excited to have some really great pictures of the two of us at this extremely joyous time in our lives. Who wouldn't want to remember this in a photo?

The other fun thing about taking pictures, was shopping and picking out outfits (probably way more for me than for Kyle). Given we are on a tight living budget, this was something that was a great excuse to find some perfect outfits - ones that made us feel comfortable and had our personalities in them. We will hopefully get amazing pictures on our wedding day, but they are obviously of us all dolled up - and these are more everyday life pictures.

I also knew immediately that I wanted my brother to take the pictures for us. He had gotten an amazing camera and was taking a few photography classes on the side. Plus, it allowed us to feel totally comfortable and take as many pictures as we wanted/needed (and we DID). It also gave Kevin and I the chance to somewhat "work together" as neither of us are engagement picture experts but both had really cool ideas. Lastly, it ended up giving us excuses to hang out for the day and for my brother to be a part of something very special to us. Overall, he did an AMAZING job and I continue to get compliments all the time about the editing and the pictures. I am so happy with them, I just now need to figure out a great way to display them in our home!

Here are some of my favorites to share with you:  Thanks Kevin!!

I was obsessed with this building as soon as we saw it!

Winner Winner chicken dinner

So.. I am kind of obsessed with contests. It is not a 24/7 obsession, but when I find contests that I think I can actually win, I kind of go all in and act a little crazy. I mean I think I have some logic behind this, considering I find really weird contests like build your own gingerbread house, and take a picture of Surf Taco sticker and win! This past few months, I have been seeing a lot of engagement and love type contests..so being as I think Kyle had the cutest little proposal ever, I've been entering them. Plus the fact that our love story includes us dating since 16 years old doesn't really dampen our story either ;)

I never really thought of us as a "story" but many of these contests ask you to tell your "how you first met story" or tell us "how you got engaged" or tell us "about you and your fiance". These contests have been making me reminisce about 10 years ago and also realize that we do have a pretty good story. I love remember these little details that haven altogether slipped my mind, but just have been hidden away by the now, med school, studying - you know. As I have been reflecting, I realize more and more that Kyle and I have really become an "Us" over the years together instead of just two individuals. It is a GREAT feeling.

So here are just some of the things I have written to enter some of these crazy contests:
  • Philadelphia Magazine - November 2011 Winning Couple!
http://www.phillymag.com/weddings/wedding_announcement.html?announcement_idx=513
How They Met: Kyle and I meet in high school, at the age of 16, and as soon as we met each other we were smitten from the very beginning. We hung out with the same group of friends and everyone wanted to help get us together. We had our first kiss in our friend's backyard, and everyone was clapping and saying finally! We then went through high school together, going to senior prom and even winning class couple. We did long distance through college and we knew as soon as we graduated, we never wanted to be far apart again.
The Proposal: I went to Cambodia for 3 weeks for a medical mission trip, which was the longest we had spent apart since college. After 4 long days of traveling home, Kyle came to pick me up at the Philadelphia airport. After I pulled my bag off the baggage claim belt, I turned around to see Kyle on his knee. It was such an amazing surprise! He completely took me off guard and then next day we went to our hometown to celebrate with friends and family We were featured in the November issue - a very small corner but still in there none the less!
  • David's bridal, "Tell us Your Love Story" contest: we entered the tell us about your first date portion:
I told what I think can be considered our first "date". Kyle came over to my house and we decided to walk about a mile to the video store to get a movie. It was only drizzling when we left, so we decided to go anyways and brought an umbrella just in case. It turned out in started pouring raining for our walk. Kyle, trying to be a gentleman held the umbrella for us and we kept close together. However, when we got back to my house I realized Kyle entire left side was SOAKING wet because he really had held the umbrella over me. I knew then what a sweet person he was and that this was a special man. The picture was at our senior prom, where it also rained and kyle still kept me dry.

  • The most recent contest I entered was on the TODAY show with Hoda and Katilee (gosh I love them). It was to tell how you got engaged and submit 3 photos. So here is my entry - wish us luck so we can win a vacation!!
It took me 3 days of traveling to get back to the US, and during that time I had the flu and was just so miserable. I knew Kyle would be picking me up from the airport though, so I was pretty excited to see him. I first saw him holding up a “limo driver” sign with my name and thought it was totally cute! However, it was 11pm at night and I was ready to get out of there! He looked so pale and clammy, and I kept asking him if he was having low blood sugars (because of his diabetes), when really he was just so nervous. We went to the baggage claim and I saw my bag come around (hooray!). As I went to reach for it, I turned around and Kyle was on the floor (aka on his knee) – I really thought he was about to faint! He then pulled out a ring box and began to tell me how much he loved me and how he could never again spend another day without me. I was so shocked and overwhelmingly happy- tears where shed and I was shaking. He could not have surprised me with a more romantic gesture and a more beautiful ring! He had flowers and champagne waiting in the car while we called our families. I feel more unconditional love with Kyle than I could ever imagine. I would travel around the world again anytime for a welcome home like this and can’t wait to marry the man of my dreams!!

Somebody's gotta win!
